Prayer for Protection at Night

A guardian's watch through the dark hours

Night can bring a particular kind of vulnerability — the mind wanders, fears grow louder in the silence, and we are no longer able to watch over ourselves as we do in daylight. This prayer turns to Saint Michael the Archangel, the great warrior of Heaven, asking him to stand guard while we sleep. For a prayer of general protection, you may also wish to pray the Prayer for Protection.

Saint Michael the Archangel, mighty defender of the light, stand watch over me as darkness falls and the world grows still. You who cast down the prince of shadows, keep every evil far from this house tonight. When my eyes close and I can no longer guard myself, be my sentinel at the door of sleep, and let no fear, no nightmare, no whisper of the enemy disturb my rest. Surround my bed with your sword of flame, that I may lie down in peace and rise refreshed to serve God another day. Watch also over those I love who sleep under this same sky, that Heaven's silent army may keep guard while we are unaware. Saint Michael, glorious prince of the heavenly host, be near to me through every hour of the night, until the morning light returns and I can thank God for a peace kept safe. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this prayer each night before turning off the light, especially during seasons of fear, insomnia, or unsettling dreams. It is also fitting to pray it when traveling and sleeping somewhere unfamiliar, or whenever the darkness itself feels heavy.

Benefits of This Prayer

Praying to Saint Michael each night builds a quiet trust that we are never truly alone, even in our most defenseless hours. Over time it can calm restless sleep and ease the fear that sometimes comes with darkness, drawing the heart back to the peace God intends for those He loves. Many find it a natural companion to the Prayer Before Sleeping.
