Prayer in Time of Grief

Weeping with the Mother who understands loss

Our Lady of Sorrows stood at the foot of the Cross and watched her own Son die, making her the truest companion for anyone carrying fresh grief. This prayer does not ask her to explain the pain but simply to hold it, as a mother holds what she cannot fix. Those grieving a specific death often pray it together with the Prayer After Losing Someone.

O Mother of Sorrows, who stood beneath the Cross and felt your heart pierced by the sword of grief, look upon me in this hour of loss and sorrow. You who wept for your Son, know the weight of this pain I carry; you who did not turn away from suffering, do not turn away from me now. Hold my grief within your own sorrowful heart, and carry it, with me, to the feet of your Son. Obtain for me the grace to trust in God's mercy even when I cannot understand His ways, and grant me the quiet comfort of your presence until the day when every tear is wiped away. Our Lady of Sorrows, comfort of the afflicted, pray for me. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the raw first days after a loss, at a wake or funeral, or whenever grief resurfaces unexpectedly on an anniversary or ordinary afternoon. It is also fitting on September 15, the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Benefits of This Prayer

Praying it regularly does not remove grief but teaches the heart to carry it in company rather than in isolation, trusting that sorrow held with Mary is never sorrow held alone. It opens the soul gradually to hope in the resurrection, without rushing past the reality of loss. Many also find comfort in the Prayer for Strength in Suffering as healing continues.
