Prayer After Losing Someone

Grief carried in a mother's arms

This prayer turns to Our Lady of Sorrows, who held the lifeless body of her own Son and knew a grief no parent should have to bear. It is prayed by anyone mourning the death of someone they love, in the raw first days after a loss or in the long ache that follows. Many find it pairs naturally with a Prayer in Time of Grief for the weeks and months of mourning ahead.

Our Lady of Sorrows, you who held the body of your own Son in your arms and knew a grief beyond words, be near to me now that I have lost someone I love. The silence where their voice used to be is heavy, and I do not know how to carry this absence. You did not turn away from Calvary, and I ask you not to turn away from me in this valley of loss. Help me to grieve without despair, to remember without being undone, and to trust that love does not end where life on earth ends. Hold my sorrow alongside your own, and lead me, gently, toward the hope of the resurrection, where every parting will be made whole again. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray it at the wake or funeral, in the disorienting quiet of a home that suddenly feels emptier, or on the anniversary of a death when grief resurfaces unbidden. It is also fitting on sleepless nights when memory keeps returning to the one who is gone.

Benefits of This Prayer

Praying this regularly does not rush grief or ask it to disappear; instead it teaches the heart to grieve without despair, holding sorrow and hope together as Mary did beneath the cross. Over time it can soften the sharp edges of loss into a steadier, gentler remembrance, and often leads naturally toward a Prayer for Families as the ones left behind learn to support one another.
