Maron was a Christian hermit who lived in the mountains of Syria around the turn of the 5th century, following a form of ascetic monastic life practiced in the open air rather than within a monastery's walls. He became known for his holiness and reportedly for healings attributed to his prayers, drawing disciples who gathered around his way of life.
After his death, a monastery was built in his memory, and the monks who followed his spiritual tradition eventually formed the community that became the Maronite Church, an Eastern Catholic Church now centered primarily in Lebanon and named in his honor.
