Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
A prayer of protection composed by Pope Leo XIII
This prayer, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886, asks Saint Michael the Archangel — named in Scripture as the leader of the heavenly army — for protection against evil. It became a standard prayer said after Mass for decades and remains widely prayed today.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
