Prayer to Calm an Overthinking Mind

For a mind that will not stop racing

There is a particular exhaustion that comes from a mind that will not stop — replaying conversations, rehearsing worries, circling the same question long after it has stopped being useful. This prayer is for that overthinking, that mental noise, distinct from the general unease covered in Prayer for Anxiety. Saint Teresa of Ávila, whose own mind was often pulled toward distraction during prayer, discovered through long practice how to gently return a wandering mind to God.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, you who knew how a restless mind can chase the same thought in circles until it wears down the soul, pray for me now as my own thoughts refuse to be still. One worry leads to another, and before long I have replayed the same fears a hundred times without finding any answer in them. Teach me to notice when my mind has begun to spin, and to gently bring it back, again and again, into the presence of God. Help me see that not every thought deserves my attention, and that peace is found not in solving everything at once but in resting in the One who already knows the outcome. Quiet the noise in my head as you once quieted the many voices that competed within your own soul. Let me set my thoughts down at God's feet like a burden too heavy to carry alone. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this prayer whenever you notice the same worry looping over and over without resolution, especially late at night or in the middle of a task that requires focus. It is also fitting before beginning prayer itself, to quiet the mind enough to actually listen.

Benefits of This Prayer

Regular use of this prayer trains the mind to notice its own spinning and gently interrupt it, rather than being carried along by every anxious thought. It builds the habit Saint Teresa herself practiced: returning again and again to God's presence instead of trying to think your way out of every worry, complementing the trust prayed for in Prayer for Clarity About the Future. Over time, it can loosen the grip that rumination holds over daily life, replacing mental exhaustion with a quieter, steadier attention.
