Prayer for Peace During Uncertainty

For the unease of not knowing what's next

Waiting for test results, an answer, a decision, or simply for a season of unclear life circumstances to resolve can bring a particular kind of unease — not racing thoughts exactly, but the low, constant hum of not knowing what is coming. This prayer is for that uncertainty, a different burden than the overthinking addressed in Prayer to Calm an Overthinking Mind. Saint Teresa of Ávila lived much of her life amid unresolved circumstances and unanswered questions, and she found in trust, not certainty, the ground of her peace.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, you who walked long years without knowing how God's plans for you would unfold, be near to me now as I wait in this uncertainty, not knowing what comes next. I do not know how this will end, and the not-knowing is its own kind of burden, heavier some days than the outcome itself. Teach me to make my home in this present moment rather than in the future I cannot yet see, trusting that God is already present in whatever is coming. Help me hold this waiting with open hands instead of gripping it with fear, remembering that uncertainty for me is never uncertainty for him. Let your own trust become my own: let nothing disturb me, for all things are passing, and God alone does not change. Grant me the patience to wait well, and the peace of knowing I am held even in what I cannot foresee. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this prayer while waiting for news, a diagnosis, a decision, or any outcome that has not yet been revealed. It is equally suited to seasons of unclear direction in life, when you cannot yet see the path ahead but must keep walking it.

Benefits of This Prayer

This prayer builds the habit of resting in God's presence today rather than in an outcome that has not yet arrived, easing the particular strain of prolonged waiting. It can be prayed alongside Prayer for Clarity About the Future when uncertainty is tied to a specific decision, and it deepens trust that God's providence is already at work in what remains hidden from view. With time, it can turn anxious waiting into a more peaceful, hopeful patience.
