Very little about Valentine can be established with certainty, and the Church itself acknowledges that the surviving accounts of his life are largely legendary. The most common tradition holds that he was a priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II who continued to perform Christian marriages in defiance of imperial restrictions, and who was ultimately arrested, imprisoned, and executed for his faith around the year 269.
Over the centuries, Valentine's feast day became associated in Western culture with romantic love, courtship, and devotion between couples — a connection that developed gradually through medieval literature rather than from anything specifically recorded about his life. Despite the uncertainty around the historical details, he remains one of the most widely recognized names on the Church's calendar.
