Saint Philip Neri

Philip Neri was born in Florence in 1515 and moved to Rome as a young man, where he spent years living simply, tutoring children, and engaging ordinary people, including many living on the margins of the city, in informal spiritual conversation rather than formal preaching. He was eventually persuaded to be ordained a priest at 36, continuing his practice of gathering people for prayer, music, and discussion in a relaxed, welcoming style unusual for the time. These gatherings developed into the Congregation of the Oratory, formally approved in 1575, which combined community life with an emphasis on joy, humor, and approachability alongside serious spiritual discipline. Known widely as "the Apostle of Rome" and for a notably playful, humble temperament even as his reputation for holiness grew, he was canonized in 1622 in the same ceremony as Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier.
