Peregrine was born in Forlì, Italy, in 1265, into a family opposed to the Church; as a young man he reportedly struck a preaching friar, later seeking forgiveness and joining the Servite Order himself. He spent decades as a priest known for austere penance and care for the poor and sick.
Late in life he developed what tradition describes as a cancerous growth on his leg, so severe that amputation was planned; the night before the surgery, he is said to have prayed before an image of the crucified Christ and awoke with the disease gone. He died in 1345 and was canonized in 1726.
