Saint Martin de Porres

Martin was born in Lima in 1579, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed Black woman from Panama, in a colonial society that placed severe legal and social restrictions on people of his mixed heritage. Because of this, he joined the Dominican convent in Lima only as a lay helper rather than a full religious brother, a status the community later set aside as his holiness became undeniable. He worked for decades in the convent's infirmary, extending his care to anyone in need regardless of race or status, including the enslaved, the poor, and stray animals, and reportedly possessed a gift for healing widely attested by contemporaries. Despite the discrimination he faced throughout his life, he became one of the most beloved religious figures in colonial Lima, and was canonized in 1962.
