The best-known account of his life, recorded centuries later, describes a man of great size who devoted himself to carrying travelers across a dangerous river; one day, he carried a small child who grew impossibly heavy, revealing himself as Christ carrying the weight of the world.
His name, meaning "Christ-bearer," reflects this legend, which — while not historical fact — shaped centuries of devotion. He is traditionally counted among the "Fourteen Holy Helpers" invoked in times of difficulty.
