Titus Brandsma was born in the Netherlands in 1881, joined the Carmelite order, and became a respected scholar of mysticism, eventually serving as a professor and rector at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. He was also active as a journalist and press advisor to the Dutch Catholic press.
When Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands, Brandsma was tasked by Dutch bishops with personally visiting newspaper editors to instruct them to refuse Nazi propaganda directives, an act of direct, public resistance that led to his arrest by the Gestapo in 1942. He was moved through several prisons before being sent to Dachau concentration camp, where he continued quietly ministering to fellow prisoners despite brutal treatment, and was killed there by lethal injection later that year. He was canonized in 2022.
