Prayer of Gratitude

Praising God with open hands

This prayer gives voice to thanksgiving on ordinary days, not only in moments of relief or answered petition. Saint Francis of Assisi, who praised God through sun and moon, water and fire, teaches that gratitude is not reserved for good news but is a whole way of seeing the world. Families gathered at table, or anyone who has just prayed the Prayer for Healing and now wishes to give thanks, will find this prayer a natural next step.

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord, with Saint Francis of Assisi we lift our hearts in thanksgiving for the gift of this day. He who praised You through Brother Sun and Sister Moon, through Sister Water and Brother Fire, through our Sister Mother Earth, teaches us to see Your goodness in all created things. For the breath in our lungs, the food on our table, the faces of those we love, and the quiet beauty of the world around us, we give You thanks. Saint Francis, troubadour of gratitude, help us to live each day with open hands and a grateful heart, praising God our Lord in all things, and giving Him thanks and serving Him with great humility. Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this at the close of the day, around the family table, or whenever you notice a gift, small or great, that you might otherwise take for granted. It is especially fitting after receiving good news or answered prayer.

Benefits of This Prayer

Praying it regularly trains the eye to see God's goodness in ordinary things rather than only in extraordinary ones. Over time it guards against the complaint and entitlement that creep into daily life, and cultivates the same joyful humility that marked Saint Francis's own praise of God.
