John Henry Newman was born in London in 1801 and became a highly influential Anglican priest and theologian at Oxford, a leading figure in the Oxford Movement seeking to recover Catholic elements within the Church of England. After years of intense theological study and personal struggle, he concluded that the Roman Catholic Church held the fuller claim to historical continuity with the early Church, and was received into the Catholic Church in 1845, at real personal and professional cost.
He was ordained a Catholic priest, founded the Birmingham Oratory, and continued a prolific career as a theologian and writer, producing influential works on the development of Christian doctrine, the nature of religious belief, and conscience. Made a cardinal in 1879 in recognition of his contribution to theology, he remains one of the most studied Catholic thinkers of the modern era. He died in 1890 and was canonized in 2019.
