Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini

Frances was repeatedly rejected by religious orders due to her fragile health before founding her own community, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, dedicated to education and charitable work. Hoping to be sent as a missionary to China, she was instead directed by Pope Leo XIII toward the United States, where a large wave of Italian immigrants faced poverty, discrimination, and inadequate access to Catholic parish life. Despite an intense fear of the ocean stemming from a near-drowning in childhood, Frances crossed the Atlantic some thirty times over the following decades, and eventually became a naturalized United States citizen. She founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages across the United States, South America, and Europe to serve immigrant communities, ultimately establishing sixty-seven institutions before her death in Chicago. She was canonized in 1946, becoming the first citizen of the United States to be declared a saint.
