Ambrose was born around 340 in Trier, then a major city of the Western Roman Empire, and rose to become the Roman governor of the province around Milan. In 374, while attempting to keep order at a contentious episcopal election, the crowd unexpectedly acclaimed the still-unbaptized Ambrose as their new bishop; he was baptized, ordained, and consecrated within about a week.
Despite his sudden entry into Church leadership, Ambrose became one of the most influential bishops and theologians of his era, known for his eloquent preaching, his hymn-writing, and his willingness to confront even emperors on matters of conscience. His sermons in Milan played a direct role in the conversion of Augustine of Hippo, who described being deeply moved by hearing Ambrose preach.
